What causes things not to dry when the temperature drops? Thinner switching.

Despite having the same conditions as summer, the drying is poor. This explains how to review solvent selection and curing time during temperature drops.

Even though I painted under the same conditions as in summer, the drying has become poor. What has changed is not the paint, but the temperature. ────────────── ■Cause of Occurrence The evaporation rate of thinner varies greatly with temperature. Using slow-drying thinner intended for summer in the autumn and beyond prevents the solvent from fully evaporating. ■The Truth When the temperature drops by 10 degrees, the evaporation time of the solvent roughly doubles. The remaining solvent escapes from the inside during curing, creating voids and pinholes. The surface may dry, but the interior remains uncured, leading to issues in the next process. ■Improvement Measures Determine and display the brand and dilution ratio of thinner for each temperature range. Ensure adequate setting time and fully remove the solvent before curing. Please utilize the seasonal thinner selection chart.

What causes paint to string? Viscosity and solvent balance.

Paint stretches and adheres like threads from the gun. The stringing is stopped by the viscosity and the evaporation rate of the solvent.

The moment it is blown, the paint stretches like a thread and adheres to the product. It is not a malfunction of the gun, but rather the condition of the paint. ────────────── ■Cause of Occurrence If the viscosity is too high, the paint does not become mist and is stretched into threads. If the solvent evaporates too quickly, it can solidify in mid-air and create threads. ■Truth A difference of just 5 degrees in temperature visibly changes the viscosity. Using paint that is cold in the morning without adjustment increases the viscosity. Continuing to use fast-drying thinner with a summer mindset can have the opposite effect in autumn and beyond. ■Improvement Measures Before use, adjust the paint temperature to around 20 degrees and check the viscosity with a viscometer each time. Use standard and slow-drying thinners according to the temperature range. Please utilize the materials for viscosity management and thinner selection.

What is the reason for the fear of dependence on a single company? Secondary suppliers.

I will explain the risks of having only one supplier for painting and the steps to smoothly establish a second supplier.

There is only one outsourcing company for painting. When production stops, there is no alternative, and this cannot be safeguarded by inventory. ────────────── ■ Cause of Occurrence Painting is an equipment-intensive industry, and if the furnace stops, there is no alternative. Production will halt due to disasters, equipment failures, or restrictions on raw material supply. ■ The Truth During the solvent shortage in spring 2026, some factories experienced delays in painting due to shipment restrictions. It takes several weeks to establish a new outsourcing partner due to color matching and setting conditions. If you start looking for alternatives after production has stopped, it will be too late. ■ Improvement Measures Divert about 10% of the quantity to a secondary supplier while maintaining conditions. Place regular small orders to keep color samples and process conditions intact. Please utilize the materials summarizing the procedures for establishing a secondary supplier.

What is the cause of the lack of thinner? The situation in the Middle East and the shortage of solvents.

The desired amount of thinner has not arrived. I will explain the chain from crude oil to solvents and the measures that can be taken on-site.

The thinner is not arriving in the desired quantity. Prices have also risen. The cause lies not at the site, but upstream in the raw materials. ────────────── ■ Cause of Occurrence The raw material for thinner is naphtha, which is derived from crude oil. Due to the worsening situation in the Middle East, crude oil prices have surged, leading to a reduction in the supply of naphtha. ■ Truth Since spring 2026, major paint manufacturers have raised thinner prices by 50 to 75 percent. At the same time, order restrictions were imposed, with some periods limiting orders to one can per company. Although distribution has been gradually returning since July, prices have not reverted to their original levels. ■ Improvement Measures We will review the dilution ratio for each process and quantify the necessary amounts. A partial switch to powder coating, which does not use solvents, is also a realistic option. Please utilize the materials for considering the switch to powder coating.

What is the reason for not being able to use the same paint as before? Consolidation of brands.

The specified paint has been discontinued, and a successor product has been recommended. I will explain the procedure to avoid color differences during the transition.

When I specified the same paint as before, I was told it was no longer being produced. The number of brands is decreasing. ────────────── ■Cause of Occurrence Since the supply disruption in spring 2026, paint manufacturers have been narrowing down the varieties they produce. Brands that are not bestsellers are being consolidated or discontinued, and a switch to successor products is being requested. ■Truth Even if the successor product has the same color number, the resin and pigment formulations have changed. Due to differences in gloss and hiding power, if applied directly, there will be a color difference compared to the old product. Some brands have extended their delivery time from the usual 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks. ■Improvement Measures For the approved drawings, we will specify the color number and standards instead of the brand name. During the transition, we will confirm color differences and adhesion using test paint boards before entering mass production. Eiwa Kogei is responding to the selection of alternative brands and the submission of test paint boards.

Solvent-based baked coating service

Leave metal coatings such as melamine resin baked paint and acrylic resin baked paint to us!

We offer "solvent-baked painting," which involves heating at temperatures between 120°C and 200°C for more than 30 minutes to cure the paint. Unlike forced drying painting, baked painting uses heat-curing type paints. We provide melamine baked, acrylic baked, urethane baked, and fluorine baked options. 【Baked Painting Technology】 ■ Melamine Resin Baked Painting ■ Acrylic Resin Baked Painting *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.
